Who and where
Roughly half way between Alicante and Murcia airports hides the village of Torremendo. This is the real Spain. People speak loudly (in Spanish), let off fireworks, apparently because it's a Sunday or Monday, and dinner doesn't start until half past nine in the evening.

The baker's van calls every day- you'll hear his horn blaring at 11.30. The fish man every couple of days, and the draper's van once a week. The shoe man arrives now and again. The potato van on a Sunday.

Here we have a reknowned restaurant whose specialities include wild rabbit paella or local snails in garlic. We overlook an azure lake teeming with carp and black bass.
Walkers, cyclists and nature lovers only have to walk 100 metres to be on the tracks that encircle it. We have an irrigation canal whose level bank is well surfaced for over 30km south to Cartagena. Others meander here and there amongst the acres and acres of orange, lemon, almond and olives. You are more likely to spot little egrets or hawks than seagulls. House martens love to nest under the balconies. Deer, hare, partridge & black grouse are frequently seen, with date or banana palms almost as common as the various types of cactus.

Golfers have at least 7 courses within 15 minutes, from a simple par 3 course to a splendid championship 6000 metre par 72.

This is not a tourist development with swimming pools Irish bars and hypermarkets; they are a twelve minute drive away.

If it's city life you like, Torrevieja is stuffed with an international selection of bars and restaurants- Spanish, English, Irish, Brazillian, Moroccan, Russian and Portuguese. No doubt there are others I haven't seen.

Orihuela, rich in history, with moorish architecture, medieaval churches, a ruined castle the second largest palm garden in Europe, and all the shops you could ask for is 12 minutes in the opposite direction from Torrevieja. It's Tuesday market is terrific, and with a main line railway station, you can travel cheaply to the cities of Alicante and Murcia without worrying about where to park.
